Rob showed up one at the studio with a sketch of the voicings he proposed using in his arrangement for this tune. Even played on the piano, they were immediately elegant and haunting. The next morning he produced this gorgeous arrangement, written on 5-stave paper, which included the exquisite violin solo. During recording, each staff was individually played by Rob on his then-current rig of samplers and synths. Afterwards, David Nadien came over and played the violin solo with stunning perfection the very first pass. Rob and looked at each other incredulously and turned to David. "We hate to see you leave so soon, why don't you play it again?" His second take was equally impeccable. I have no idea which take we used, since either was without the slightest fault, though I imagine we used the first. I wasn't familiar with David at that point, but I later realized that he had been the concertmaster and contractor on Milton Nascimento's "Courage" album, an album which had absolutely blown my mind in 1972 when I first heard it. I cut the electric guitar on this track using an instrument I borrowed from my stalwart friend John Pisano, with whom I had a regular quartet in the early 1980s. This reminds me, I ate many good feijoadas at the Brazilian restaurants in Hell's Kitchen in NYC while working on this album. |
